Ridgeline Western Construction self-performs all framing and carpentry tied to fireplaces—removing water-damaged wood, correcting framing around fireboxes and mantels, and rebuilding chase structures that have failed from settlement or rot. When working with existing units or prepping for new prefabricated inserts, we open chase surrounds, expose the studs and supports, and assess for missing fire blocking or improper clearance to flammable materials. Structural gaps and separation at hearths or mantels get rebuilt with new framing for lasting support.
Anything involving masonry—such as chimney repairs, flue relining, or tuck-pointing—as well as gas work, runs through licensed subcontractors scheduled and managed by us. Ridgeline Western Construction is owner-operated by Steven Moreno, a general contractor and framing specialist who is on every project from scope meeting through final walkthrough. Fireplaces are one of the few features where exterior and interior framing meet high heat, venting, and structural support — and getting that intersection right matters. Steven inspects the framing beneath the hearth, around the firebox, and up the chase to catch gaps, rot, or previous makeshift repairs that compromise fire safety or code compliance. His carpentry background means every phase — from setting support for heavy masonry to integrating a chase for a prefab insert — is checked for fire blocking and bearing, not just appearance.

Most fireplaces in Southern California homes are either site-built masonry chimneys or prefab metal units with framed chases and stucco surrounds. Over time, clay flue liners can crack, crowns and cap flashings fail, and the structure supporting chases/raised hearths can develop dry rot or separation from settlement. Spark arrestors rust out along with firebox supports, and wood framing behind the veneer can suffer when flashing isn’t right. Earthquakes may also crack masonry or shift nonstructural surrounds, which can hide framing problems.
Services under this hub split between repair, full rebuild, and fireplace overhaul. Structural carpentry — repairing or reframing damaged chases, firebox supports, and framing for mantels — is always self-performed. Masonry and flue work, plus gas line modification or relining, runs through licensed subcontractors.
