What We Do With Skylights
Every skylight project starts with careful cut-in and framing. We open the roof at the marked location, reinforce the structural opening by doubling rafters, installing headers, and tying in blocking where the span requires it. When the area around the skylight shows dry rot or termite damage, we remove and replace affected framing members before the curb or shaft is set to ensure solid support at every edge. The new curb height is adjusted to match the slope and roofing material, so water drains the way it should.
Integration with the roofing assembly is coordinated through our licensed roofing partner. They handle underlayment, step and saddle flashing, and setting the skylight glass, while we oversee the interface to guarantee a tight and reliable seal. This dual approach means the most leak-prone part of the roof is backed by both framing detail and correct waterproofing. Drywall and interior finish around the opening are sequenced to follow, tying the new or replaced skylight into the ceiling plane cleanly.
Occupied homes require dust containment and clear protection on finished surfaces inside. We limit interior exposure by isolating the cut area and only opening the roof once all the framing is prepped. Each phase is scheduled for a short window to keep your home closed up at the end of every workday, especially during the Southern California rainy season or fire season permit windows. Code compliance is documented throughout — from using fire-rated underlayment in Chapter 7A zones to ensuring all curbs are flashed to local detail standards.
